About the program
Multidisciplinary care for people who support daily life with movement disorders.
Movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease impose substantial physical, psychological, social, and economic burdens on patients, caregivers, and families, especially in low-resource settings where access to specialist care and support services may be limited.
DWEP 2026 brings neuroscience, neurology, psychiatry, psychology, rehabilitation, nursing, nutrition, social support, counselling, and community advocacy into one practical outreach experience for caregivers and families in Ogbomoso.
The program aligns with the mission of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society by advancing education, increasing awareness, supporting underserved populations, and improving access to multidisciplinary care in sub-Saharan Africa.

Improved caregiver knowledge will be measured through pre- and post-program questionnaires.
Symptom awareness
Participants will better understand motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.
Caregiver support
Caregivers experiencing significant burden, stress, anxiety, or depression will be identified for referral and support.
Home-based care
Participants will improve understanding of medication adherence, rehabilitation, fall prevention, and home-based care strategies.
Stigma reduction
The outreach will strengthen community awareness and reduce stigma toward people living with movement disorders.
Caregiver network
A local caregiver support network will be encouraged for ongoing peer support and information sharing.
Multidisciplinary collaboration
Collaboration among neurologists, psychiatrists, physiotherapists, nurses, psychologists, and community stakeholders will be strengthened.
Educational materials
Educational materials in English and Yoruba will support continued community education after the outreach program.
